Japanese company develops air cleaning paper
On October 19, 2005, Nippon Paper Co., Ltd. announced that they had collaborated with YOMIURI SHIMBUN to develop a newsprint paper with a photocatalytic titanium oxide coating. When the paper is exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays, it cleans up the air by eliminating everyday odors such as tobacco smoke, sweat, and pet odors. This is the first time in the world that photocatalytic mixtures have been used in newspapers. Conventional techniques have the problem of degradation of paper quality caused by photocatalytic reactions, but Nippon Paper Co., Ltd. has solved this problem and has succeeded in achieving the effect of purifying air, and it also has the value of printing paper. This paper can withstand the printing pressure of high-speed offset printing presses, can control the ink well, and can be used to create flyers, posters and calendars. Titanium oxide acts as a photocatalyst and reacts in sunlight or under fluorescent light. Therefore, it can decompose organic chemicals such as formaldehyde in the air, which can cause indoor nausea syndrome. Due to its chemical stability and air neutrality, titanium oxide is attracting everyone's attention as an effective photocatalyst.
