Computer program that reveals the role of RNA in cells
Computer engineers may provide the medical community with a new method for accurately calculating how proteins form and function. Shaojie Zhang, assistant professor at the University of Central Florida, uses a complex computer program to analyze RNA motifs, the subunits that make up RNA. RNA, DNA and protein are the three building blocks of life. Knowing how these three building blocks collaborate and how deviations occur will help understand what causes disease and how to treat them. Thanks to the Human Genome Project, people have found a lot of information about DNA, but people do n’t know much about RNA. RNA helps encode genes like DNA. Some viruses also use RNA as their main genetic source for replication. A variety of RNAs are involved in all processes, including protein synthesis, controlling gene expression and transmitting cellular signals from one part of the body to another. The motifs that make up RNA fold like a long accordion, and the structure is variable. In the past, many motifs have been identified, but until now it has been difficult to realize a fast automated method to determine the structural pattern of different types of motifs. Zhang said, "We have discovered many new RNA structural motifs using the new calculation methods we developed. This breakthrough can greatly increase our knowledge of RNA structural motifs. And the newly discovered motifs may help us Develop methods to treat certain diseases. " Zhang's research results were published in the journal Nucleic Acids Research. Using a computer, Zhang and his research team have been able to observe the accordion-like structures of these RNAs and how they fold on a three-dimensional scale. This computer program can quickly scan many RNA samples and discover unique motifs that form structural patterns. This information can provide researchers with useful information about their functions. Zhang said, "This helps explain how organisms work and why it sometimes makes mistakes, which can lead to some fatal diseases."
