The cash register is already OUT! This venture recommends restaurants to be managed with a cloud POS system.

At the peak of lunch and dinner, are you still worried about the innocent service of the restaurant staff? Try Slurp! Slurp's app lets you order without having to wait.

Slurp, a start-up company, offers Malaysian food and beverage retailers a cloud-based POS system that operates on the iPad and tries to take a slice of the restaurant industry.

Due to the “cross-cutting” of food, Malaysian food service retailers are not only expected to increase in number, but also in scale. The latest industry data shows that the value of the food and beverage industry in 2012 was slightly less than 10 billion US dollars, which is equivalent to a compound growth rate of 4.6% in 2008. It is estimated that by 2017, the growth rate can reach 5.3%.

Due to the existence of different customer groups, the number of catering companies in Malaysia is also growing. Areas like Klang Valley (composed of Kuala Lumpur and its suburbs) are densely populated, not only Malaysians, but also expatriates from Indonesia, India and Nepal, as well as foreign workers. We also have to consider the influx of international tourists. After all, Malaysia has become a trendy shopping mall in the Asia Pacific region.

Of course, as such demand grows, catering retailers are constantly facing the challenge of “operating the company efficiently”. This is why we want to implement Slurp.

Slurp has developed a POS software for use on the iPad. This software allows retailers to manage their menus, inventory and pricing. It also records employee punch-in time and allows the restaurant to provide member services, push ads and coupons.

Slurp has also developed applications and software that can be used by customers and employees to place orders and accept orders. Customers can now download the iOS or Android version of the "customer app", and the diners can sit down at the table and order their own orders, ask for special requests and view the bills. On the other hand, the “waiter application” allows employees to receive and manage customer orders.

Slurp's launch is accompanied by other hardware products: iPad, iPad stand, cash register and a receipt printer.

Co-founder Reza Razali said: "The manual order method is not only inefficient, but also error-prone. Slurp will automate this process to improve the retailer's operational efficiency."

He added: "Slurp's POS system is cheaper, which is crucial for small food and beverage outlets that have just opened. This price is also in line with the Malaysian government's recent VAT regulations."

Get sales information with a single click

All information on the Slurp POS system is stored in the cloud. Reza said that this provides a different kind of fun for the restaurant business of the catering retailer, because Slurp's POS system allows retailers to gain insight into how they can improve the restaurant's operations and sales. For example, they can associate sales information with individual dishes on the menu so they can know which food is most popular. Retailers can view the traffic of the restaurant every hour, and can also find some employees who perform well in terms of the number of orders.

Slurp users can also access these analysis reports from the main control panel using any browser or device.

100th customer

Reza and his co-founders - his sister Zara Aida and Calvin Tam - came up with the idea of creating Slurp in 2011. They launched the first version of Slurp in 2012, but the market did not respond well. Reza recalls: “We returned to the market in January 2014, when the acceptance of the cloud POS system by the companies in the market has greatly increased. Since then, we have begun to gain widespread recognition in the market.”

When Slurp acquired its 100th customer this month and launched a distribution program, the company's development reached a milestone.

“We are very pleased with the overall feedback we have received so far. We are currently trying to find some potential partners to promote Slurp to cities like Penang, Ipoh, Melaka, Johor Bahru and Kuching,” Reza said in an interview. "In addition, we are still exploring whether there is any opportunity to push Slurp to the international stage. This is why we are obsessed with finding distributors to help us expand into new markets."

He also said that Slurp will provide distributors with preferential mechanisms, including free training, free marketing materials and marketing assistance for offline or online channels.

Since its launch, Slurp has been growing on its own. Reza also does not believe that the company needs to raise funds in the near future. He said that the capital flow of his startup is still very optimistic.

Slurp makes a profit by selling its product portfolio, which includes software and hardware devices and a monthly subscription fee. The product portfolio value is MYR 4,888 (US$1,113), which includes the first year of cloud service and technical support. After the first year, retailers (up to three stores) will be charged MYR 150 ($34.15) per month, while retailers in more than three stores will be charged MYR 300 ($68) per month.

“Our goal this year is to earn more than RM1 million ($22.76 million).” Reza said, “We are confident in the future of the cloud POS system. Today, we can see more and more restaurant owners willing to The data is stored in the cloud."
