New process that reduces ethylene investment costs

GEConcept Technology LLC applied for a new process patent for the production of ethylene, which can reduce ethylene investment costs by 35% and energy costs by 45%. According to the company, this savings was achieved by combining a natural gas plant, a fractionation unit, and an olefin plant into a single series of integrated unit. In addition to its own separation function, the gas device also functions as a methane refrigeration system, so that the cooling step of ethylene refrigeration is reduced from the usual 3 steps to 1 step, and the propylene cooling step is reduced from 4 steps to 2 steps.
Methane from the gas plant is also used for the reflux of the demethanizer to remove more than 50% of the demethanizer equipment. According to the company, methane backflow can reduce ethylene pressure by 25% to 1.7 MPa. The company estimates that the cost of the combined unit production of 681,000 t/a ethylene will be 400 million U.S. dollars, three sets of separation devices will be 610 million U.S. dollars, and the annual operating expenses will be saved by 49 million U.S. dollars.
