Following is detailed results of a recent, non-scientific survey of FTA's narrow-web printer members, in which they have expressed their considerations about the label and tag business, competitive pressures and coming challenges.
Members of the FTA Flexo Printing Association's label and label printers recently voted for five strong customer demands that have always challenged employees. They are: short print runs, fast turnaround times, lack of customer loyalty, more and more equivalent to offset printing, gravure printing and high quality price competition pressures and requirements.
These results are from a recent non-academic survey of FTA narrow web printing members. A total of 325 manufacturers meet the survey requirements, accounting for 42% of FTA printers, and the annual transaction volume reaches billions of dollars. According to feedback, it was concluded that FTA typical label printers put into operation 5 to 10 printing presses, 15 jobs a day, more than 50 employees, and printing requirements within 200,000 impressions; the average annual business volume has just reached 400 Millions of dollars.
Finding new customers is a long-term concern. The investigators claimed that maintaining profits in an oversaturated market is a very complicated matter. The market requires thick ink coatings that can only be obtained using UV technology. Keeping the balance between cost and profit is a long-term demand, just as maintaining the perfect network and pre-press processing needs of the factory, according to a sample survey of 14% of FTA label/label printers, "design is becoming more and more difficult. "They describe the current task in a simple language: "Let designers and customers believe that flexo printing can make offset prints now, and flexo printing saves money and still obtains a very high quality."
Chart overview 13% of survey respondents claimed that label printing accounted for 100% of their business, 70% of printers stated that labels accounted for 90% of their total annual revenue, and 78% of printers stated that label printing accounted for 70% or more. High, 83% believe that at least half of the sales, and 91% of the label printing accounted for at least 30% of its business share.
In terms of labels, 39% of the respondents had a business volume of 5%. In addition, 17.5% of sample surveys estimate that label printing accounts for at least 3% of revenue. In contrast, an 8.7% FTA label printer survey showed that label production controls more than 70% of capital transfers.
Of the factories surveyed, all had more than 10 employees and 91.3% had more than 20 employees. 82.6% of the factory's employees are over 30, and 69.6% of the factory's employees are between 40 and 50. More than half of the manufacturers (52.2%) have employees between 50 and 60, and 43.5% of the factory employees have more than 60 employees. Only 21.7% of the surveyed manufacturers claimed that there were more than 90 employees, while only 17.4% of the manufacturers had more than 100 workers.
57% of the contact manufacturers had an average print length of 75,000 marks or less, 74% said that the print length was 100,000 marks or less, and 66% said that the print length was slightly less than 200,000. Only 4.3% of the manufacturers claimed that the maximum print volume reached 500,000, and also 4.3% of the manufacturers said that the large-scale flexographic print volume reached 2,000,000 or more.
Regarding the labeling, 4.3% of the printers said that they often accept 500,000 or so jobs. More typically, 17.4% of the manufacturers are under pressure from never reaching the print length of 100,000 prints; 13% of the manufacturer's job length is just out of 200,000 prints. Most label printers (26%) surveyed showed that most of their processing work orders were 25,000 prints or less, and 17.4% of the manufacturers specialized in making ultrashort prints of less than 5,000 prints.
The total number of presses put into use by all surveyed manufacturers was 174. The vast majority of printers (48%) have 5 to 10 printers and 26% have 10 or more printers. 26% of the manufacturers put into production 2 to 5 printers, while 4.3% of the manufacturers put into production more than 20 units.
In the past 12 months, the length of these presses to accept the job was recorded within a certain range. According to the survey, 34% of FTA labels and label printers claimed that they had printed more than 10 million copies of the maximum number of live jobs, and 26% claimed that they had received 15 million of the largest orders. Twenty-two percent of the printing factory's top orders exceeded 20 million, and 8.7% said it had exceeded 30 million. The label and label printers participating in the survey pointed out that usually one day’s work consists of 15 different jobs, that is, 450 orders per month and 5,400 copies per year.
Standards and Controls According to the survey, more manufacturers insist on fulfilling certain printing standards than unfulfilled manufacturers, with a ratio of 87% to 13%. The most widely used universal standard program is the FTA "Flexographic Image Replication Standard and Error Scheme (FIRST)", which is claimed by 57% of manufacturers.
Some printers admitted that they had modified the FIRST guidance program to apply to their production, while other printers stated that they are trying to make all aspects meet the entire standard platform. In the sample survey, some printers also use ISO standards to guide production.
Funding Budgets 70% of the surveyed manufacturers plan to invest in equipment over the next 12 months; 44% of them say they will spend more than $500,000. The maximum investment amount for a single buyer is reportedly at $1.5 million, and the minimum investment is also between $30,000 and $35,000. 30% of the printers said that there was no equipment investment plan in the near future, and 28% of them said that they would seriously consider deciding to postpone major investment by one year.
