How to master InDesign as soon as possible?

In order to enable friends to grasp the use method of InDesign as soon as possible, we will illustrate its operation process through an example. Before doing it, let me say a few words. When contacting Indesign at first glance, many friends will feel very unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Especially its operation concept is very different from PageMaker. Everyone should always compare Indesign with the latter subconsciously. When you are not proficient in Indesign, you may not have a deep understanding of the advantages and powerful functions of Indesign, and then you will think that Indesign is not as good as the previous PageMaker. I also had this illusion when I started using Indesign.

However, when you sit down in front of the computer, light a cigarette on the right, make a cup of tea on the left, open the manual in front of you, and spend a day or two, forget about the PageMaker you are familiar with, and devote yourself to every research of Indesign. A function, and think about how much convenience these features will bring to my typesetting work, try again and again on the computer. In this way, you will gradually become familiar with it, like it, and will swim in the free kingdom of Indesign. In the end, Indesign will surely become an indispensable tool for you. There are usually four steps: creating a layout; typesetting; adjusting and modifying; output.

1. Create a layout:
1) Select the File menu-New-Document.

2) Set in the dialog box that appears: first determine the number of basic pages. Select "Master Text Box" to facilitate the unification of future text boxes. Decide the page size and binding direction. Then determine the bleeding value. If necessary, select the "printable area" value. Select "Page Margins and Columns" when finished.
Note: If you want to open InDesign repeatedly in the future, the document will automatically display the parameters you want as the default parameter settings, then you need to open the new document:
A. Select the menu: Layout-Page Margins and Columns, and set the corresponding parameters.
B. Select the menu: file-document settings, set the corresponding parameters.

When these tasks are completed, whenever you open a new document, the program will use these parameters as the default value of the new document.

3) In the dialog box that appears, select the core size, number of columns, text layout, and column spacing. Choose "OK".

4) Make the main page. Select the "Page" toolbox. Select the corresponding main page.

2. Typesetting:

1) Place text:
Method 1: Select "Text Tool" in the toolbar. Hold down the "Apple + Shift" key, and click the center of the page to apply the main text box to the current page.

Select the desired text and select "Show input options" in the lower left corner of the dialog box. In the subsequent dialog box, after setting the required parameters, click "OK". Place the desired text. (You can select "Automatic Arrangement" as needed).

Method 2: Open the desired text file, "Select All", "Copy", click on the Indesign page, and "Paste".

Method 3: Select the desired text and drag it to the Indesign page.

2) Define the character style and paragraph style: select the "Paragraph Style" toolbox. In the dialog box that appears. Select and set various items in order. It should be noted that in the "Overall" section, you can set shortcut keys to improve work efficiency.

3) Text editing: Select menu: Edit-Text Editor.
Put the defined paragraph styles into the desired paragraphs respectively.

4) Place graphics: Select the "Outline" tool in the tool box. Draw a graphic frame of the corresponding size at the position where the graphic needs to be placed.
Select the menu: File-Place.
Select the desired graphic to place.

5) Graphic layout: select menu: window-text and table-text wrap around.

3. Adjustment and modification:

1) Text adjustment: It involves global changes and should be adjusted in the paragraph style. The modification of local text is adjusted in the character style. Now, we need to change the subheadings in the paragraph to "medium lines". Steps: Select the "Text Style" toolbox. Change the style name to "Title in the text". Select "Medium Line" in the "Font Set", click "OK" to select the subtitle in the text, and click "Title in Text" in the character style.

2) Paragraph style adjustment: According to the overall layout, adjust and modify the originally defined paragraph style separately. Select "Paragraph style" "Toolbox selection" indentation and spacing "In the first line indentation" type 7MM. Click "OK". At this point, the paragraph is automatically indented before the paragraph.

3) Graphic adjustment:

Select the graphic to be modified. Select the menu: Objects.
Choose "shadow", "feather", "gradient", "corner effect", etc. according to your needs.

When adjusting graphics, you need to adjust the aspect ratio of the graphics content, etc., use the "direct selection tool" in the toolbar.

4) Layout order adjustment: Open the "Page" toolbox. At this time, you can see the thumbnails and page numbers of all pages. Drag the mouse to put the page to be adjusted in front or back.

4. Preparation before printing:

1) Check information: Select menu: File-Preparation before printing.
In the dialog box that appears, a detailed report is given of all that you have done. Producers and operators who output film should carefully read and check this report. The key points should be checked:

a. Page size, bleeding, layout direction;
b. Picture type and link status;
c. Color attributes and spot colors;
d. Check the font type and attributes;
e. External plug-in.

2) Modification: After the inspection is completed, the content and settings that do not meet the requirements are returned to the original file for modification.

3) Packing: select the menu: File-Pack in the dialog box that appears, fill in each item as required as possible. After filling in, click "OK".

At this time, a new dialog box appears, according to your needs, pay attention to select the contents of the command box in the lower left corner, click "OK".
At this time, Indesign will automatically create a new folder and make a complete backup of all relevant texts, graphics and various files in this work. It is convenient for you to categorize and save, and it can also be provided to the output center. It avoids the shortcomings of missing files that often occurred in the past.

4) After sending to the output center, the output operator should also repeat the above work and make corresponding parameter settings according to the output requirements.
